Seriousness
In Hawaii, there are two kinds of time. The first is Hawaii-time and the second is Prime-time. Hawaii-time is when you surf and lay in the sun and enjoy paradise, but Prime-time is when you put all that surrounding beauty out of your mind and show up on time and get to work.
In the adult world, most time is Prime-time. And that is always true when you are working. The time that you spend at work has a different definition of time well spent. That definition is typically not made by you and that is where you may have to make adjustments to your thinking. This is when you need to leave your personal world behind and move into the business world.
Focus is one of your most important tools. But you can also focus on a video game, where much of your experience of time well spent is based on enjoyment. There is a level of seriousness that you need to bring to working that isn’t concerned with enjoyment as much as it is concerned with completing your task or role as required by the job.
Life as an adult is often a reward system. If you work hard and well when working then you earn time to go off and enjoy yourself. But as an adult, you are expected to make some kind of a contribution to society--or to your employer--first. Good habits are important to build when you first begin. Professionalism is one of your most important ingredients to success and is one of the things most appreciated by employers and anyone else that you work with.
